7 Steps to a Fulfilling Job

Thirty some years ago, when I had graduated college, I started my first real job search.  The goal was to get “a job” and start my career – not very specific; however, I got my resume together and started applying. It was like throwing darts until one stuck.  Three months later my career was launched.

The course of my career has had it’s share of twists and turns including a layoff after 9/11 and another as a result of a company merger.  I survived through each learning more about myself and what I liked and didn’t like or want to do.

Fast forward 10 years and I had “a job” that afforded me the lifestyle I had grown accustomed to – great, yes….well maybe not fully. Something hit me – I wasn’t working at a job that genuinely excited me and I started to think what’s next.  Rather than start a job search I began to search for what I wanted to do and what would light a spark in me.  My pursuit led me to becoming a Life Coach.

I recommend using the following steps to finding a “fulfilling job”:

1.      Look inside yourself

a.      What makes you tick?

b.      What motivates you?

c.      Is there something you always wanted to do but thought you couldn’t?

2.      Align the interests and skills you enjoy doing to job responsibilities to identify positions that can be rewarding.

3.      Consider the un-expected or something brand new.

4.      Tailor your resume or continued education to the position(s) you seek.

5.      Research the industries and companies of interest.

6.      Network, letting people know what you are pursuing.

7.      Be the interviewer as well as the interviewee to ensure the company and people area fit for you.

The path is rarely a straight shot, so be prepared to take some detours along the way - you never know what may be just around the corner.

Here’s to finding and lighting your spark!
